Common questions

Frequently asked

The app, the subscription and the printed atlases.

Is Pilots Atlas free?

The app is free to download, and a lot of it stays free forever: every chart type, offline map downloads, live ADS-B traffic, the airport, navaid, waypoint and POI markers on the chart, the Captain’s Corner reference tools, and five AI copilot messages a day. Premium adds the full detail panels for airports, navaids, waypoints, points of interest and current weather, trip planning, and unlimited copilot messages.

How does the free trial work?

There are two, and they are separate. Installing the app gives you 14 days of full Premium with no payment details and nothing to cancel — when it ends the app keeps working and simply drops back to the free tier. Separately, if you then take the monthly subscription, Apple adds a further free week before the first charge, which you can cancel any time during that week in Settings. The annual subscription has no introductory week — it bills from the start.

Is live ADS-B traffic really free?

Yes, with no subscription and no premium gate. Traffic comes from several community networks — adsb.lol, adsb.fi, OpenSky and others — with automatic failover if one is unreachable, and you can also feed the map from your own SBS1, Stratux or GDL90 receiver.

Does Pilots Atlas work without a signal?

Yes. Download the map regions you need over Wi-Fi before you fly and the chart, the aviation database and your synced METAR/TAF are all available offline. Map downloads are free. Live traffic and fresh weather are the only things that need a connection, for obvious reasons.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad, plus an Apple Watch companion and Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets. The current release needs iOS or iPadOS 18.6 or later.

I reinstalled the app or moved to a new device — how do I get my purchase back?

Open the Store tab and tap Restore Purchases. As long as you are signed in with the same Apple Account that bought it, your subscription or lifetime unlock comes straight back. Older per-region purchases from earlier versions are recognised too — you do not need to buy again.

The app crashes, or the map opens blank. What should I do?

First make sure you are on the current version from the App Store — most crash reports we receive are from older builds that have already been fixed. If it persists, force-quit and reopen; if the map is blank rather than crashing, check your chart type and whether the region is still downloading. Reinstalling is safe: your purchases restore, though locally downloaded maps have to be downloaded again. If none of that helps, please write to us with your device model and iOS version — that pair is usually enough for us to reproduce it.

Can I import and export my routes?

Yes — trips import and export as GPX, and they sync across your own devices. Trip planning is a Premium feature.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are billed by Apple, not by us, so they are cancelled in Settings › your name › Subscriptions on your device. Cancelling stops the renewal; you keep Premium until the period you already paid for runs out.

How long does a printed atlas take to arrive?

Two to three working days within Germany and five to six across Europe, dispatched after payment clears. Full rates, delivery times and the countries we ship to are on the delivery & shipping page, and you have a 14-day right of withdrawal.

Can I order a printed atlas without a PayPal account?

Yes. PayPal handles the checkout, and its guest option takes a normal debit or credit card without you creating an account. If you would rather pay by bank transfer or need an invoice for a company or flight school, just write to us and we will arrange it.

Still stuck?

Tell us what happened and we’ll take it from there. Bug reports from pilots are how this app has been built since 1998.
